Annet Chesang clinches the Women’s half marathon to bag a 3m cash prize| Tusker Lite Mount Rwenzori Marathon, Kasese.

On Saturday the 3rd of September, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon was held in the 5KM, 21KM, and 42KM categories.

The event was made public and every participant will traverse through the various places within Kasese Municipality as Kilembe, Chanjojo, Mburakasaka, Kasanga, Muzogoti, Kirembe, Portal Road, Rwenzori Road, Kilembe Road, and Rukidi III, among others.

Annet Chesang won the women’s 21km Tusker lite Kasese marathon after crossing the finish line at 1:21.29 seconds to claim gold.

Nasasira Evas took silver, having clocked 1:26.26 seconds to the finish line just five minutes behind Chesanga Annet.

The women’s half Marathon’s bronze was won by Chebet Emma having finished the race in 1:32.22 seconds as namesake Chebet Linda finished fourth.

The marathon at the foothills of Uganda’s tallest mountain was run at a much higher altitude, than the usual ones covered in Kampala.

The Rwenzori stands at 5,109 meters offering a completely different running experience While Kampala is at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level.

This marathon was sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited under the Tusker Lite brand as they contributed Shs. 800m to the Rwenzori Marathon.

Other sponsors include Rwenzori Natural Mineral water who contributed Shs 170,000,000, Health partner Rocket Health, Jumia, Standard Chartered Bank, and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), among others. 

The event’s chief guest was the State Minister for Tourism Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka.

Other dignitaries included the UNDP Uganda Country Representative Elsie G Attafuah, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Chief Executive Officer Lilly Ajarova, area Members of Parliament, celebrated politician Winnie Kiiza (former woman MP, Kasese and leader of opposition in Parliament), Buganda Kingdom Prince David Wasajja, former Vision Group CEO Robert Kabushenga, Equator Heights director Amos Wekesa, among others.

A Sh42m prize money was shared amongst the winners – Sh5m, 4m, 3m, 2m, and Shs1m await the top five winners in the 42km for both men and women.

Not only the marathon took place but also other activities that include; the tourism expo and re-greening Kasese drives that both will conclude on the 4th of September 2022.
