The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has today Friday, announced the cancellation of the 2020/2021 Regional League season.

The 2020/2021 Regional League which was scheduled to start in June 2021 has been cancelled due to the spike in COVID-19 cases across the country, more so the Covid-19 disruptions that have heavily impacted many sectors and aspects of life, with the current partial lockdown worsening the situation and transport restrictions to making it tricky for teams to conveniently access premises for games.

“Due to the supervisory and logistical hiccups caused by the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, FUFA has decided to cancel the FUFA Regional Leagues for the 2020/2021 season,” FUFA said in a statement.

This has come just a week after an official communication was made postponing the Regional Leagues until further notice.

In a circular number 1135 that was dated 2nd June 2021 signed by FUFA Deputy CEO Football Decolas Kiiza, which read; ‘’As you are all aware, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Health there is an upsurge in the number of COVID-19 cases as well as death in Uganda. Therefore, in order to ensure the health and safety of players, Technical staff, and all stakeholders, the FUFA Regional leagues anticipated for kick-off in the near future are hereby postponed until further notice. Clubs and all stakeholders are advised to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccination is taken by all.’’

Among the regions that were ready for the season was the Kitara region as the 2020/2021 season was expected to kick off on 12th-June-2021 and come to an end on 20th July 2021.

Twenty-four Clubs were to take part in the Kitara Regional League with 13 Clubs from Edward Group and 11 Clubs from Albert Group.

According to FUFA, efforts will be diverted to an early and timely kickoff for the 2021/2022 Regional League season. The federation urges everyone to continue intensifying efforts in the fight to stop the spread of Covid-19 in the Country.

The FUFA Regional leagues include Buganda Region Football Association League, Kampala Region Football Association League, Western Region Football Association League, West Nile Region Football Association League, Eastern Region Football Association League, Northern Region Football Association League, North-East Region Football Association League, and Kitara Region Football Association League.

It is not only football that has been affected by the pandemic but also other sports activities as we saw earlier this week, Uganda Volleyball Federation cancelled the Aporu Okol Memorial Volleyball Tournament.

Though the competitive play is still allowed to continue, President Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s State of the Nation address held on Sunday 6th June 2021 in which he issued several directives in a bid to curb the further spread of Covid-19 which included a ban on inter-district travel both using public and private means has caused a major hindrance to sports activities in the country.
