It is no secret that a lot of people want Express FC to be handed the Uganda Premier League title in the same manner Vipers SC won it last season. FUFA used the 75% rule due to a force majeure event, to crown Vipers SC winners of the Uganda Super League 2019/2020 after a total lockdown was effected due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Football is facing a similar situation after all sport activities were put on hold for the next 42 days, with FUFA suspending the remaining premier league fixtures until further notice. But one person who hasn’t hidden her interest in lobbying FUFA to hand her club the trophy is Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, the former Express Nation chairperson.
This speculation has forced the Express Nation CEO, Mr.Mwesigwa Isaac to come up and clear the air by saying by issuing a statement. “As a club we were prepared to play our remaining games of the season but unfortunately the current COVID-19 situation has made it impossible, so for now we can only await further communication from the FUFA on a way forward but just like the players and staff at the club, I urge #ExpressNation to continue observing the SOPs as directed by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museven.”
It is no doubt that this second wave of COVID-19 is very virulent and is shaking every sector of the nation and in the event that FUFA decide to discontinue the league and award Express FC the Uganda Premier League title for the 2020/2021 season, everyone would understand as the association has the mandate to protect the health of players and coaches staffs alike.
For now, as the CEO noted, we wait and see what happens after the 42 days if the league will be allowed to resume and the remaining four matches played to decide the champion for this year.
