The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is biting all sectors alike, as the deadly virus continues to turn our lives upside down. Sport activities were allowed to continue during the first presidential address on 6th June 2021 under strict SOPs as guided by the Ministry of Health. However during the second address, President YK Museveni suspended all sports activities in the country citing mass gatherings at the various sport events which increase the speed at which COVID-19 spreads.

This directives forced FUFA to suspend all of its remaining league fixtures and they are now faced with a tough situation on how to conclude the football calendar year.

FUFA posted a statement on its website which reads;

 “Further to FUFA Circular 1141 the FUFA Executive has decided that in view of the prevailing circumstances, the following Competitions for the season 2020/21 have been postponed indefinitely. The Star Times Uganda Premier League, the FUFA Big League Play offs and the Stanbic Bank Uganda Cup semi-finals and Final. And that new dates were to be communicated after obtaining the necessary clearance from the Government. Meantime the football family is encouraged to continue observing SOPs and abide by the Presidential Directives and Ministry of Health guidelines. Together we can stop the spread of the Coronavirus. It is Our Game, It is Our Country.”

The announcement by the president was made when UPL was about to end but with many matches still pending in the UPL, Big League, and the Uganda Cup

FUFA is rumored to be engaging the government to allow all football competitions to carry on so that the 2020/21 season is concluded. The Uganda Premier League had returned for the game week 27 before it was halted halfway, the FUFA Big League was halted at the play off stage, and the Uganda Cup had reached the semifinal stage, when the sport activities were suspended.

As sports lovers, we applaud the federation for this attempt to try and get clearance and we would like for the season to be completed, but these are unusual times. It remains to be seen if the government will offer the necessary clearance to allow the various eagles to be completed.

Express FC are the current leaders of the Uganda Premier League with 58 points and were waiting to play Wakiso Giants before the league was halted.
