The 2021 Uganda Rugby Premier League kicked off on 6th/03/2021, after a year without competitive games. It was a long wait for the league to return but finally the game was back to our yards,

Game Week 1

The first game week started on a negative note when the game between Jinja Hippos and Warriors was postponed due to the unavailability of Legends Rugby grounds where it was supposed to take place.

That was not taking away the spirit of the game, with mouth watering fixtures to look forward to; title contenders Pirates were to battle it out with reigning champions Heathens at Kyadondo Rugby grounds at 4:00 pm.

Match of the Day:

Heathens Vs Black Pirates

In the buildup, this promised to be the match of the day, and when the action started, it did not disappoint.  Pirates and Heathens are both title contenders with their squads largely considered to be two of the strongest in the league.

This was a tightly contested match with both teams throwing bodies on all loose balls and touchdowns hard to come by.

However the defending champions managed to edge it out against their title rivals with a score of 24:19. To the champions this was a battle for title contenders with Pirates strengthening their squad in the transfer season. Aaron Ofoywroth starred for Heathens while Pirates were boosted by the return of centre half and captain Ivan Magomu.

Heathens took the bragging rights of the day with a champions display however there was a lot to be admired from the Pirates team.

Outstanding Performance

Rhinos Vs Kobs

FT: Rhinos 00: 51 Kobs

Kobs put up an outstanding performance for the weekend. This was a strong message to other teams that the Kampala Old Boys meant business this season. A score of 51 with no response from the Rhinos meant that Kobs outdid their opponents both defensively and offensively.

Kobs ended the day with the highest score of 51, and displayed a strong defense by keeping the Rhinos attack neutralized.

Game Week One Results

Heathens Vs Pirates   24:19

Buffaloes Vs Rams   15:03

Rhinos Vs Kobs   00:51

Table standings

Kobs ended the day as the table leaders closely followed by Buffaloes who won 15:03 against the Rams and Heathens in third after their win over the Black Pirates.

Game Week 2:

Second week games took place on 13th March 2021. With nail biting fixtures to look forward to, this promised to be a weekend of more action to look forward to for both fans and players.

Buffaloes had a date with the champions at Kyadondo. Rams were visited by the Rhinos who were confident after their win in the first week. At Legends, the Kobs entertained Warriors while Hippos welcomed Impis at Dam Waters after their first match against Warriors was postponed during game week1.

Match of the Day: Hippos Vs Impis

The Uganda Stingz derby was a one sided game with Hippos too powerful for the Impis. This was Hippos first game of the season at the Dam Waters with their strong squad boosted by quality newcomers such as Eliphaz Emong.

There was much buzz about how strong the team really is and everyone was looking forward to this match especially after their first match was cancelled in the first round.

Impis lost their first match to the Mongers by a narrow margin of 10:15, and likewise were no match for the Hippos. Ebonga and Emong were outstanding in the match with Echeru and Edrine making considerable contributions to the win. If the Pirates, Kobs and Heathens were considered the only title contenders, the Hippos put out a performance worth being included in that category.

Key Performances: Kobs Vs Warriors

FT: Kobs 55:09 Warriors

For the second week in a row Kobs managed to score over 50 times with another resounding performance from key players; Pius Ogena, Justin Kimono and Brian Ochan.

There were little sparks of stardom from Richard Kinyai but that was not enough to hurt the Kobs defense in any significant way. Kobs managed to stay at the top of the log for the second week running making them formidable title challengers to Heathens Pirates and Hippos.
