Halima Nakaayi, a middle-distance runner from Uganda, has been given a new position as a member of the World Athletics Athlete’s Commission.
She is the first Ugandan athlete to hold such a position and is the 2019 World Champion in the 800 meters, She also won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Indoor Championships.
Elections were held in Oregon, USA, from July 15–20, 2022, during the World Championship event, and Nakaayi and the other three Africans won last week.
The 27-year-old began her campaigns on July 1 via social media with support from her manager Jurrie van der Velden and her close training partners Ronald Musagala and Winnie Nanyondo.
To be eligible for the seat, one must have competed in one of the last two editions of the Worlds, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, or at the Oregon22 stage.
