The 12th East Africa University Games, which culminated on Wednesday, saw a resounding victory for the hosts Ndejje University.

Makerere University, and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) came in second and third positions respectively.

In the recently finished East Africa University Games, Ndejje University, which had over 240 athletes, won the most medals with 124; as the host, it also won the overall competition, claiming the title for the seventh time.

Ndejje won 26 bronze medals, 39 silver medals, and 59 gold medals.

Makerere University, which won 68 medals overall—21 gold, 20 silver, and 27 bronze—followed closely behind.

Out of the 25 Universities that competed in this year’s edition, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) finished third. The Nakawa-based team left with 40 medals, including 15 gold, 6 silver, and 19 bronze.

With nine gold, 21 silver, and 33 bronze medals, Kenyatta University placed fourth overall and returned to Kenya with 63 medals.

The State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, attended the closing ceremony as a guest of honor and advised universities, particularly those in Uganda, to refrain from deploying no-student teams in university contests since doing so will ultimately hinder the growth of sports in the nation.

“I congratulate Ndejje for hosting a successful event, I congratulate all the winners and the participants but I ask the Universities not to use none students in these games, and if a University is caught I ask let it be banned for one, two or three years while not taking part in the games with a huge fine, don’t fine the tutor or student, but a whole University.” Said the Minister while giving his speech at the event.

“Use of none students in these games, hinder the development of the sport in the country, you can’t get the Cheptegeis, you can’t the product for national team that can represent the country, so avoid none students in these games.” He concluded.

The event drew at least 3000 attendees and authorities, according to the organizers.
