COSAFA CUP:Coach Mbewe Releases 27-Man Chipolopolo Squad

Zambia’s under-20 coach, Chisi Mbewe, has been tasked with leading the senior national team, Chipolopolo, at the 2024 COSAFA Cup scheduled to take place between June 26 and July 7. The regional tournament will be held in Gqeberha, South Africa, and Mbewe has wasted no time in naming a 27-man provisional squad for the competition.

Local based flooded squad

Mbewe’s squad comprises entirely of local players, except for Albert Kangwanda, who plies his trade as a striker for Al Hilal but is currently on loan at his former club, Red Arrows, due to unspecified events in the country. The coach will be supported on the technical bench by Mwenya Chipepo, who will assist with coaching duties, while Donewell Yobe is tasked with the role of physical trainer. Emmanuel Msichili has been appointed as the goalkeeper coach, and Lombe Chipupu will assume the position of team manager.

Teenagers earns call to the senior team

The squad features several new faces, including the relatively untested 19-year-old midfielder from Zesco United, David Simukonda, as well as the U20 duo of Mathews Banda and Sekanji Siame, with Siame being the youngest player on the team at just 18 years of age.

MIDFIELDERS; Dickson Chapa (NAPSA Stars), Frederick Mulambia, Austin Muwowo (both Power Dynamos), Abraham Siankombo, Kelvin Kapumbu, David Simukonda (All ZESCO United), Owen Tembo (Power Dynamos), Saddam Yusuf Phiri (Red Arrows), Kelvin Mwanza (FC MUZA), Charles Majapa Mumba (Green Buffaloes).

STRIKERS; Albert Kangwanda (Al Hilal-Sudan, Andrew Phiri (FC MUZA), Jimmy Mukeya (Kansanshi Dynamos), Ricky Banda (Red Arrows), Enock Sakala Jr (ZESCO United).

The defending champions will kick off their campaign by facing guests Kenya on June 27 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. They will then lock horns with arch-rivals Zimbabwe in a Group B clash at the Wolfson Stadium on June 30 before wrapping up their group stage fixtures with a match against the Islanders, Comoros, on July 2.
