NBA Africa and New Era Education, a leading Cairo-based educational services and school management company, announced an exciting multiyear collaboration on Monday, June 24. This partnership aims to establish and operate the first-ever NBA Basketball School in Africa, set to open its doors in January 2025 at Uppingham School Cairo, located in New Giza, Egypt. The initiative promises to bring unparalleled basketball training and development opportunities to Egyptian students, setting a new standard for youth sports education on the continent.

A Milestone in Basketball Development

The NBA Basketball School at Uppingham School Cairo will cater to youth aged 5-18, offering a comprehensive, year-round, tuition-based basketball development program. This program will encompass on-court training, skill development, and basketball education tailored to various skill levels. Head of NBA Egypt, Mohamed Abdel-motaleb Soliman, highlighted the significance of this launch, stating, “The launch of Africa’s first NBA Basketball School is a significant milestone in our continued efforts to grow the game in Egypt and across the continent.”

Enhancing Educational Opportunities

Dr. Tamer Tammam, Chairman of New Era Education, emphasized the broader educational implications of this collaboration. He noted, “The collaboration with NBA Africa on the NBA Basketball School program underscores our dedication to providing youth with opportunities for growth and development, both on-and-off the court.” This initiative aligns with New Era Education’s mission to deliver high-quality educational institutions in Egypt, offering students access to a world-class training program that not only hones their basketball skills but also fosters leadership and personal growth.

Building on Past Successes

The NBA Basketball School will build on the league’s previous successful initiatives in Cairo. These include hosting the last three Basketball Africa League Nile Conference group phases, conducting Jr. NBA clinics for local youth, and organizing the 18th edition of Basketball Without Borders Africa. Furthermore, the establishment of the NBA Egypt office in January 2023 has laid a solid foundation for expanding basketball programs in the region.

A Comprehensive Training Curriculum

The NBA Basketball School curriculum is meticulously designed by the NBA’s International Basketball Operations department, in consultation with current and former NBA coaches, players, and player development specialists. This curriculum aims to provide players with a clear pathway for improvement while offering parents, coaches, and organizations a deeper understanding of the development process. The holistic approach ensures that students receive top-tier training that covers technical skills, game understanding, and personal development.

Expanding Global Footprint

Since its inception in 2017, NBA Basketball Schools have been established in numerous countries worldwide, including Australia, Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Lithuania, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Uruguay. The launch of the first NBA Basketball School in Africa marks a significant expansion of this global initiative, bringing the NBA’s elite training standards to Egyptian soil.

Fostering Future Leaders

The NBA Basketball School program is not just about developing basketball talent; it’s about shaping future leaders. The program’s emphasis on discipline, teamwork, and perseverance aims to equip students with valuable life skills. By integrating these elements into the basketball curriculum, NBA Africa and New Era Education are committed to nurturing well-rounded individuals who can excel both on and off the court.
