Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei took to his social media to congratulate the Norwegian Jacob Ingebrigten for his amazing European record yesterday in the Golden Gala. Cheptegei had control of the race through 3 splits and he commanded the rest in the 2000m, 3000m, and 4000m distance before he ran out of gas towards the end to give way to the 20-year old Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigsten who finished first in Thursday’s Golden Gala.
The prolific athlete acknowledges his lack of gas towards the end, though he was very positive about the outcomes of the race. He accepted that it wasn’t his day after he relinquished his lead to finish sixth at the 2021 Diamond League meet in Florence, Italy on Thursday.
This was Cheptegei’s best season’s timing of 12:54.69, even though it failed to give him the first spot that he deserved after leading for most of the race. His timing was way above his Norwegian opponent Jakob who had the record timing of 12:48:45 and also the fastest run this year.
Speaking after the race, Cheptegei said there is room for victory for the Silverback after the tough outing in Florence.
Cheptegei alongside the likes of Joseph Kiplimo and Steven Kiprotich are among the names Ugandan will be looking at during the Tokyo Olympics in Japan late this year in August.
