Today, Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei will take to the track of Stadio Luigi Ridolfion for the third meeting of the 2021 Wanda Diamond League in Italy. Cheptegei feels that his body is in good shape and as part of his challenge to himself, the 5000m world record holder is targeting a timing of 12:40 in the Wanda Diamond League.

The 5000m world record holder who set the record at the Monaco meet last year will be competing again after his 3000m record attempt in Ostrava three weeks ago. The Ugandan athlete who has tested victory already in international events, will hope to improve his previous performances and come on top with a better timing of 12:40. He said he is happy to be in Italy, especially for racing. ”I had decided to run at the Rome Diamond League but I never had a chance last year and I took a different path. I come here with new energy, new momentum hoping that the weather is okay to do something for the fans who will be watching us here in Italy,” said the Ugandan runner.

His opponents in the race include the likes of Ingebrigtsen brothers Jacob and Henrik, and theEthiopian duo in Hagos Gebrhiwet and Muktar Edris. Joshua Cheptegei’s ambitious target of 12:40 is much lower than his 5000m meeting record is 12:46, meaning that Cheptegei aims at beating his own record and setting another in the encounter.

We wish him luck as he aims at flying the Ugandan flag high in the competition with better timing. The Golden Gala starts at 7:45pm (EAT) and the 5000m race time is 10:23pm (EAT). Stay tuned for results with us here at UGsports
