Kigali Arena to host maiden Basketball Africa League

Twelve teams from across the African continent will compete in the new pro-league Basketball Africa League. The league will run from May 16th to May 30th 2021. The games will be hosted in Rwanda at the Kigali Arena in Kigali. 

Format of the league was adjusted to feature 26 games. 18 games played in the group phase composed of twelve teams categorized in three groups. Each group will have four teams playing against each other to qualify for the play offs. 

The playoffs will be single elimination in all the three rounds. 

The league was scheduled for March 2020 in Dakar Senegal but because of the COVID pandemic, it was postponed. It features a partnership between FIBA and the NBA to build on the foundations of club competitions which the FIBA Regional Office of Africa has organized on the continent. This is the first time that the NBA has operated a league outside North America.
