Today marked the end of the 2021 FUFA women super league with the two teams fighting for the Title in the final game played today at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.
Lady Doves FC were eyeing their first ever Women super league Title and indeed they came out the champions.
On a sunny afternoon, the game started with both sides showing potential of lifting the trophy, and in the 5th minute UCU Lady Cardinals’ Hasifa Nassuna was unlucky when her strike hit the woodwork. And Sandra Kisakye’s 10th minute one-on-one situation was saved by Lady Doves FC goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro to deny UCU an early lead.
28 minutes into the game Mercy Nabulobi handled the ball inside the 18 yard area and a penalty was awarded to Lady Doves FC and was successfully converted by Elizabeth Nakigozi to give her team the lead in the 29th minute.
Hasifa Nassuna had another chance and was too denied by the woodwork in the 32nd minute though Teddy Najjuuma had the best chance to score from the rebound.
5 minutes later Shadia Nankya of UCU Lady Cardinals entered the referee’s books with a yellow card for a foul.
Despite having several chances UCU Lady Cardinals couldn’t find an equalizer before half time and it was 1-0 at the end of the first half.
In the 75th minute UCU Lady Cardinals found an equalizer through Sandra Kisakye’s sublime header to revive their hopes for the Title.
3 minutes after conceding an equalizer Lady Doves couldn’t spare the injured Fazila Ikwaput and she was brought in to search for the winning goal and indeed 6 minutes onto the pitch she rolled UCU defenders with a beautiful turn to find the back of the net in the 84th minute, unfortunately she couldn’t proceed with the game as she was re-injured in the process of scoring. Lady Doves had no option but to replace her with Olivia Birungi.
Fazila Ikwaput became the hero of the day with the winning goal off the bench despite earlier fears that she couldn’t appear on the squad due to the injury she sustained in the early minutes of the semifinal game.
Fazila Ikwaput finished as the top scorer of this year’s Women Super league with 8 goals, she has played a very great role for Lady Doves FC’s first ever Title.
Lady Doves FC now have a chance to represent Uganda in the Women CAF Champions League next season.
