Every week ugsports.net will dig deep into the unknown to bring you sportsmen who can still represent the country in various sports disciplines despite holding citizenship from another country.
They may have adopted a new culture and traditions but the fact that they have Ugandan DNA either by birth, registration or neutralization makes them eligible to represent the Pearl of Africa.
With the country still in search of a commanding defender in the form of former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekajja, Elio Capradossi would fit in the Cranes fold with ease. The 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) center back possesses great strength, skill and physical presence that has deprived the country ever since Sekajja’s Retirement. The 25-year-old is also good at passing, intercepting and heading the ball.
After a successful 2019/2020 season where he got involved in 32 matches for Spezia while helping them to promotion to Serie A, the 2020/2021 season is one to forget for Capradossi where the defender spent most of the season sidelined after getting injured against Cremonese on 24th July, 2020. He only featured for the club once in the entire season with his sole appearance coming on the final day of the 2020/2021 Serie A season against former club Roma in a 2-2 draw.
Born in Kampala to an Italian Father and a Congolese mother , Capradossi is eligible to play for Italy, DR Congo and Uganda. The player is a product of Italian giants AS Roma Youth Academy where he captained the Roma U19 team to the Italian U19 championship title in the 2015/2016 season.
The defender’s journey to Roma started way back in 1998 when his father moved to Italy where he received Italian citizenship from his father being a former director of Roma’s rugby team. Although his father wanted him to enroll into the Roma Rugby club, Capradossi’s preference was football.
His senior club league debut came in the Italian second division (Serie B) against Benevento at Stadio San Nicola on 24th September, 2016 after making a loan move to Bari from Roma in the 2016 Summer transfer season where he spent one and half seasons. His debut for Roma came in a 1-0 away win against Cagliari on 6th May 2018. He made his loan move at Spezia permanent on 1st August 2019 when he signed a four-year contract.
On the international scene, Capradossi can still represent both Uganda and DRC although he represented Italy at the 2013 UEFA European U17 championships and later that year at the FIFA U17 World Cup. His debut for the Italian U21 team came against Hungary on 5th October, 2017 in a 6-2 win for the Italians.
