Rwandese giants Kiyovu Sports Club are set to announce thesigning of former KCCA manager Mike Hillary Mutebi after announcing the sacking of Olivier Karekezi and his assistant Banamwana Camarade on Sunday, hours after the club’s 2-1 away loss to Rustsiro FC in the league.
According to a statement from the club, Karekezi was sacked because of breaching Covid 19 SOPs after the 37-year disappeared from the team, shortly after the loss.
Karekezi who was part of the historic Rwandese national team which shocked the Uganda Cranes at Namboole to qualify for the 2004 African Cup of Nations, joined Kiyovu SC in June 2020 on a 2-year contract after a successful spell with Rayon Sport between 2017 and 2018.
Mutebi who will be replacing the former Rwandese International underwent his COVID -19 test on Monday and is believed to earn between USD 5000 and USD 10,000 and is set to earn a six-month advance payment before his reign starts.
Mutebi left KCCA by mutual consent on March 29th ,2021 after a successful 5-year reign where he won 3 league titles and led KCCA to the CAF confederations cup group stages.
By the time of the announcement of his sacking, Mutebi had a 62% winning ratio after overseeing 152 wins out of 247 games.
Under his preferred 3-5-2, Mutebi built an attacking team which scored 446 goals but he was criticized for not being flexible in matches which required defending.
Mutebi who oversaw the emerging of Ugandan stars such as Allan Okello, Julius Poloto and Joseph Ochaya among others will be tasked to revamp the club’s academy and oversee the progress of the club across all age groups.
He is also expected to recruit his own staff as it has been “his own way”. His first task is to get the team off the bottom of group B where the team lies rock bottom with 3 points from 4 Premier league matches.
