With the confirmation of the state minister’s acceptance to grace the closure of the Games on a working day, the games organizing committee had to cut the games by a day to accommodate the function. This didn’t deter the determination of Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management Sciences (UIAHMS-Mulago) from defending the netball title.
UIAHMS showed their intentions from the start of the games, presenting a complete 14 man team of towering attack of players like Aguti and Eyaru Irene, players whose caliber can only be compared to international level.
Bwindi tried to challenge them in group stages but could only score 2 goals against 55, Kabong on their own attempted the challenge but only scored 4 goals against 50, the last contenders in the group was Bwera, this gave a little pinch on them as they scored above 5 mark of points against 32 goals.
The next levels of the competition never gave any new story, Jinja Nursing was only able to score 14 goals against 23 goals in the round of 16 level. The quarter finals had Gulu COHES who also lost 16:33, their semi-final contenders Hoima were exceptional as they also lost 13:27.
The finals was a thriller, Arua COHES which even UIAHMS feared never gave UIAHMS an easy ride. “Etiimu lobon ikuriaka so ane nes Arua” meaning “The only team we fear here is Arua” said Aguti in Ateso her mother tongue. This must have made UIAHMS raise their tempo in the games, Aguti who could not make any movements during other games was send move all around the D (Goal Circle).
The teams defended well against effective attacks and shorts, by the end of 1st half there was only 3 goal difference between the teams but in favour of UIAHMS 8:5 goals for Arua. However much Arua tried to push UIAHMS in the 2nd half, they only increased the goal difference margin to 6, giving a second successive lose to UIAHMS in two years in the finals. Arua lost 11:17 goals.
