Uganda’s interest in this year CAF club competitions may have ended when both Vipers SC and KCCA FC were eliminated from the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup respectively but soon focus shifted to individual players who were still holding the country’s flag.

Joseph Ochaya (TP Mazembe), Salim Jamal (Al Hilal), Robert Odongokara (Horoya) and Saidi Kyeyune (Al-Merreikh) all made  it to the group stage with their respective clubs but thats where it ended for them save for Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundown) and Tadeo Lwanga.

Friday’s CAF Champions League quarter finals draw pitted Onyango’s Sundown against record champions Al Ahly where Onyango’s former boss Pisto Mosimane currently plies his trade.

Mosimane first worked with Onyango at Supersport United after the Ugandan was signed from St. George in 2016.

This will be the 3rd consecutive year Sundowns will be facing the Egyptian giants at quarter finals after losing 3-1 on aggregate last year with the 1st leg ending 1-1 in South Africa. Sundowns have also got the better of Al Ahly, winning 5-0 at home in 2019.

Another Ugandan Tadeo Lwanga’s Simba will face South Africa’s Kaiser Chiefs. Kaiser Chiefs is the former club of ex international and Uganda Cranes captain David Obua. It’s at Kaiser chiefs that Obua made his mark.

The first quarter finals leg will take place on 15th May 2021 and return leg match will take place on 22nd May 2021.

Elsewhere, Abdu Lumala’s Pyramids FC will face Enyimba from Nigeria in the CAF Confederations Cup quarterfinals. Lumala is not eligible to play after the club omitted him from this year’s list.
