His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Minister of Education Janet Kataha Museveni rewarded former Uganda Cranes Captain Masinde Onyango at Statehouse Entebbe with a  brand new Pajero Sport vehicle for his  glorious career with the national team.

Onyango flew into the country from South Africa at the invitation of FUFA for the event organized by Statehouse. In his address, the president said, “I congratulate Onyango for what he has done. We shall get time in the new government and decide on this export scheme whether it is good or bad. What can we do to keep our sportsmen here.” He also added, “We thank you, sports people. Though government has not been supporting you fully, we support you indirectly through immunization, UPE, peace and security, which enables the development of your talents.”

The first lady, Janet Museveni who is also minister for education and sports talked about the need to build up the sports personalities we have so they don’t leave the country for greener pastures, if the sports industry is to grow. “We need to build on what we have. We cannot grow if whoever we prepare leaves and goes away for ‘greener pastures, because we need the Onyangos to be the coaches of the new teams, that is how nations are built. That is how those nations with super teams grow”, she said.

Event was attended by Federation of Uganda Football Association president Moses Magogo, first vice president Justus Mugisha, FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson, National Council for Sports general secretary Jasper Aligaweesa ,  state minister for Sports Hamson Obua and Uganda Olympic Committee president Drukare. Onyango was accompanied by his mother and sister.

Onyango spent 16 years with the national team and he hung up his boots a few weeks ago to concentrate on his club career with Mamelodi Sundowns. He was retiring to allow for a new crop of players.
