Robert Eseru starred with a double that made Uganda People’s Defense Forces Football Club (UPDF FC) lose its 8th position. This moved Sports Club Villa (2-1) in the Uganda Premier League on Friday.
Eseru scored a goal in either half to ensure the army side moved above the Jogoos who pulled one back through defender Joseph Nsubuga’s well-executed penalty kick at the Bombo military barracks playground.
In 25 minutes into the game, Eseru connected with a well-delivered corner-kick from the left past Amir Kakomo who was too short to retrieve the ball from the goalline.
In the 47th minute, the known champions SC Villa drew matters level through right-back Joseph Nsubugawho converted following a controversial penalty award to the side of the UPDF FC. Muhammad Senoga looked to have been fouled just outside the box but centre referee Richard Kimbowa pointed to the spot.
Again in seven minutes later, Eseru restored the lead for the hosts after some individual brilliance. He chest-controlled a long ball and ventured forward beating Geoffrey Wasswa for pace before squeezing the ball past goalkeeper Martin Ssenkooto.
The win gave head coach Kefa Kisala a warm welcome in completion of his four-match suspension by the club management as well as registering a double over SC Villa. The first leg ended 1-0 at the same venue courtesy of Ezekiel Katende.
UPDF now ascends to 8th position with 37 points while Sports Club Villa drops to 9th with 36 points after 27 games.
