Sandra Nabweteme dubbed Kid from Katwe signs professional contract with Thor/Ka

Crested Cranes forward Sandra Nabweteme has signed her first professional soccer contract with Urvalsdeild Women League club Thor/Ka women FC in Iceland.

The forward who completed her engineering studies majoring in Physics and Mathematics at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), USA in 2020 started her soccer career as a girl among boys at a tender age of 6 years under the guidance of her grand mother Gerturidah Nalubowa in Natete.

Nicknamed “kid from Katwe”, Sandra joined Proline Academy in 2008 before joining Kawempe Muslim SS in 2010 after being inspired by the school’s soccer culture.

With the introduction of the FUFA Women’s Elite league in 2014, Sandra was a key member of Kawempe’s first two league titles while becoming the league’s leading scorer with 17 goals in 2014/15 and 23 goals in 2015/16 seasons which made her the first winner of the Airtel FUFA Female player of the year in 2015.

In 2016, Sandra became the first Ugandan female footballer to earn a scholarship in the United States where she has been honing her goal scoring skills, becoming the school’s all  time leading goal scorer in 2019 with 76 goals surpassing the 74 goals record set by Burkina Faso’s Almata Rabo.
