After the recently concluded 28-29 May 2021 national Scrabble championship in Mbarara at the coffee bar, attention now shifts to the 26-27 June 2021 Kampala edition in what seems to be a busy end of year schedule for the Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU).
Sports activities have been variably affected by the COVID-19 pandemic which has not spared the game of scrabble which is widely neglected by the mainstream media houses who hold a myth that the game can only be played by “those who understand the English Language”.
The surprise winner of the Mbarara open Godwin Murungi will be up to the task to prove doubters wrong that he fluked to the title in may where he made his way past the 20 other participants from Division A who had registered for the competition.
The fact that Godwin was not among the top 5 favourites to win the title made it more historic when he won 14 and lost 4 games to rank ahead of seasonal favourites Odongkara Edgar and Ntege Chris.
Gulu scrabble club will also be looking to make headlines in Kampala after putting up an impressive performance in Mbarara in May. They came up against clubs from all over the country with the exception of Lira which has no registered scrabble clubs.
After the Kampala Open, attention will be shifted to the 24-25 July Busia open at Lola Hotel
