Due to an unpaid balance of three months’ rent, the offices of the Uganda Netball Federation(UNF) have been closed.

The federation offices were shifted from a single room at the National Council of Sports premises to the Aga Khan building in old Kampala with the intention of giving Uganda Netball a new face.

The office has been costing UNF 4 million shillings every month, thus the premises owner is requesting 12 million shillings from the federation for the months of October, November, and December, according to federation finances.

The president of the UNF, Hon. Babirye Kityo Sarah admitted that she has been paying the office out of her own pocket, claiming that the federation has not received funds from the government in the previous 18 months despite having been given 3 billion shillings by the Ugandan Parliament for the fiscal year 2022–2023.

UNF is meanwhile running a fundraising drive to build a new home.

During the launch in June this year held at Serena, the federation collected over Sh100m from sponsors and well-wishers.

Eco Bank contributed Sh10m, the same amount brought on board by Pastor Aloysius Bugingo and wife Susan Makula under their church House of Prayer Ministries.

A couple of Betting Companies under their umbrella body Uganda Gaming Board contributed Sh34m.

MPs, including former Athlete Julius Achon, pledged Sh3m each.

The Federation plans to buy Land around the Central region (Kampala, Mukono or Wakiso) worth Sh2bn, a target they hope to achieve in two years.

Then they will build a state of the art Netball facility that will have both indoor and outdoor courts, training areas among others.

While appearing before the Parliamentary committee this month, UNFpresident Sarah Babirye Kityo broke down as she revealed her ordeal with the National Council of Sports.

Babirye told the committee that National Council Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Ogwel has continuously frustrated her Federation’s activities by not complying with the set guidelines.

A bitter Babirye further alleged Corruption and bribing at the National Council of Sports mentioning illegal kickbacks demanded by some officials in the sports regulatory body.

Uganda Netball Federation western region Patron Gaffa Mbatekamwa asked the committee to ensure Dr Ogwel steps down from his role, for further investigations.
