In an exhilarating showdown at Lugogo Arena on Friday
evening, the UCU Canons showcased their prowess on the court, clinching a
commanding 69-56 victory over D-Mark Power in the National Basketball League.
The victory marked a triumphant return to form for the Canons, who bounced back from a previous defeat to the KIU Titans. With this win, they have now notched their second triumph of the season, following a dominant performance against the Kampala Rockets in the season opener.
On the flip side, D-Mark Power suffered their second consecutive loss of the campaign, having previously fallen to the relentless City Oilers before succumbing to the Canons' onslaught.
The Canons set the tone early in the game, establishing an 11-point lead (20-09) by the conclusion of the first period. Joel Kayiira electrified the crowd with a sensational dunk, setting the arena abuzz with excitement.
Despite a brief resurgence from Power in the second quarter, where they tightened up defensively, the Canons maintained their composure and entered halftime with a comfortable 14-point advantage (32-18).
A spirited effort from Power in the third quarter, fueled by Phillip Amney's sharpshooting, narrowed the deficit to six points (37-31). However, the Canons quickly regrouped and surged ahead, extending their lead to 10 points (44-34) by the end of the quarter.
As tensions rose and fouls mounted, the Canons held their nerve, ultimately securing a decisive 13-point victory. Joel Kayiira led the charge with a stellar double-double performance, tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Peter Sifuma contributed 12 points to the scoreboard. For Power, Elvis Ssentongo led the scoring with 17 points, supported by Phillip Ameny and Samad Imran with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Looking ahead, the Canons will aim to maintain their winning momentum as they face off against the JT Jaguars on Sunday, February 11, while Power will seek redemption in their clash against the JKL Dolphins on the same day.
