Taddeo Lwanga’s Simba and Onyango’s Sundowns eliminated from CAF CL in contrasting circumstances

A 3-0 win over South African giants Kaiser Chiefs was not enough to keep Simba FC in the CAF champions League. Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the semi-finals on aggregate after winning the first leg 4-0. 

The Msimbazi won 3-0 at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Tanzania infront of 10,000 fans. John Bocco scored twice in the 24th and 56th minute withCletus Chama hitting the target in the 86th minute. 

Uganda Cranes midfielder Taddeo Lwanga was withdrawn in the 35th minute because of a head injury. He collided with teammate Joash Onyango in a clash of heads. 

The Amakhosi have reached the semi final of the CAF champions league for the first time.  

Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns eliminated 

Al Ahli defeated Sundowns 3-1 to progress to the semi finals. They won the first leg 2-0 last week. The second leg was a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday. 

The record champions took the lead through Yasser Ibrahim. Moss Lebisa equalised for The Masandwani at the half hour mark. 

In other qualifiers 

Tunisian outfit Esperance Tunis advanced after edging out Belouizdad in a penalty shootout. 

Wydad Casablanca edged out MC Alger on 2-1 aggregate after playing out a 1-1 draw in the second leg. The first leg ended 1-0 to Wydad Casablanca. The 2017 champions advanced to the semi finals for the third straight round. 


Kaizer Chiefs play Wydad Casablanca while Al Ahli face five time champions Esperance. 

First legs will be played on June 18th while the second legs will be played on 25 June. Final will be played on July 17th 2021 in Casablanca Morocco.
