On a muddy and soggy Saturday evening, Mbale Heroes took the bragging rights of Mbale City after registering a 2 : 1 away victory against Big League-Elgon second placed Kataka FC in the Mbale Derby in a match that saw both teams finish with 10 men.
An entertaining first half saw the surgeons take a lead from a freekick from Kibumba Ibrahima but Kataka FC got their equalizer shortly before half time through Nandala Nassur.
The second half was no different with heavy tackles coming in from both sides but it was the surgeons who got the better of the Lufumbi boys with Okori Luka restoring the lead.
The match regained momentum as the clock was ticking. Tempers rose as pressure piled on both teams and in the end both Heroes’ Ronald Magwali and Kataka’s Hassan received their matching orders.
Mbale heroes now go into round two of the Big league with 9 points, 3 points behind Kataka FC who had started the day joint top with Arua Hill on 12 points
Elsewhere, two second half goals from substitute Kawawa helped Arua Hill extend their lead at the top of the Elgon group to 15points after overcoming bottom placed Paidha Black Angels.
Arua Hill were missing the services of danger man Caesar Okhuti who got injured before the game.
The first half ended goalless but Arua Hill piled more pressure in the second half which paid off in the 80th minute with Kawawa netting his first of the day. Phaidha sent numbers forward in search of an equaliser but the final nail in the coffin came in the 89th minute as Kawawa completed his brace for Arual. 2 : 0 it ended.
