No one wants to get the calculator out already. The mathematics of Uganda Cranes qualification is not a good subject. However hard and traumatizing, you can never run away from the arithmetics. UG sports investigates both good and worse scenarios for the Cranes.
To start with, the table standings for Group B of the AFCON qualifiers:
Team P W L D GD PTS
Burkina Faso 4 2 2 0 3 8
Uganda 4 2 1 1 2 7
Malawi 4 1 1 1 -3 4
South Sudan 4 1 3 0 -2 3
So, what is desired?
A win for the Cranes and a loss for Malawi at Al Hilal Stadium in Sudan against South Sudan will see the cranes go through with a game to spare.
If we don’t win?
At least a draw for the Cranes against Burkina Faso. And if Malawi or South Sudan win, the Cranes must win their last game against Malawi to go through.
The mathematics will be less scary if South Sudan and Malawi draw this weekend as well. This is because the Cranes will just need a draw against Malawi in the final game to remain in the top two of the table and qualify for AFCON.
But for now, one game at a time.
Here we come again, AFCON 2021.
