Just like 1978, Uganda lost to Ghana 2-0 in the final match of the Total U-20 AFCON that was attended by the FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the Olympic stadium in Nouakchott.
From the start, the Hippos seemed to be in control of the game with the best chance of the opening five minutes falling to tournament top scorer Derrick Kakooza who squandered the opportunity to put the Hippos ahead in the 3rd minute.
Slowly Ghana started to stamp their authority on the game and in the 10th minute the Black Satellites hit the crossbar twice before man of the match Daniel Barnieh, went on the score sheet in what looked to be a foul on a Ugandan defender in the 21st minute.
A mix up in defense in the 50th minute enabled Barnieh to double the lead with a simple tap in.
Substitute Bogere who came on for Basangwa had a chance to reduce the score but his weak shot did not trouble the Ghanian goalkeeper in the 69th minute. Chances were coming in quick succession but the Ugandans failed to capitalize.
A total of 50 goals were scored with an average of 2 per game in this year’s tournament across 25 matches
The player of the competition was Abdul Fatawu Issahaku from Ghana while best goalkeeper went to Ghana’s Danlad. There were also awards for Uganda’s Gavin Kizito (Best defender) and Derrick Kakooza (Top scorer).
