With only one game left in the qualifying round, Uganda Cranes face the possibility of elimination from the 2022 AFCON tournament after they were held 0-0 at home to Burkina Faso to stay 2nd in the group and a point ahead on next Tuesday’s opponents Malawi who won 1-0 away to South Sudan.
Against the Stallions, the Cranes had the opportunity to take the lead in the 17th minute through Patrick Kaddu but his effort went wide before Kaboore’s effort went over the bar for Burkina Faso as the Stallions became the likelier of the two to go ahead in the dying minutes of first half.
With the game tied at 0-0 at halftime, Tadeo Lwanga was the likely candidate to be withdrawn at half time after getting a yellow card as early as the 16th minute but coach Abdallah Mubiru had different ideas as he brought on Moses Waiswa for Mike Azira and Ibrahim Oriti for Abdul Lumala at the start of the second period.
With the score still 0-0, the Cranes got a scare as Patrick Kaddu went off in the 55th minute in what looked like a hamstring and in came Fahad Bayo.
With the pressure piling, Orit thought that he had scored in the 69th minute but his headed effort struck the goal post. Chances came in quick succession with Ochaya’s effort being saved by the on form Koffi.
The Cranes now have a hard task of avoiding defeat in Malawi or pray that South Sudan comes up with an unlikely goal margin victory to qualify.
