Uganda finish 4th in the AFCON Beach Soccer tournament as Senegal win 6th title for a record time

Uganda’s journey in the AFCON beach soccer tournament ends with no trophy to show for it. They return home having finished 4th overall after losing to Morocco in the third-place playoff. 

Uganda lost 5-1 against hosts Senegal in the Group A opener. They won one game 4-3 against Tanzania. They lost the semi-finals 6-3 against Mozambique and played Morocco in the third-place playoff. 

They succumbed to a 5-3 dubbing by Morocco in the third-place playoff on Saturday 29th May 2021. This followed a 6-3 loss to Mozambique in the semi-finals on Friday. 

Baker Lukooya scored a brace for the Sand Cranes and Alex Emmanuel added one. Rabi Aboutalbi and Nassim El Hadaoui scored a brace and Yassir Abada’s other goal for Morocco in the playoff match. 

The main event was a final which came after the playoff game. Hosts Senegal faced Mozambique in a contest for the top prize. 

The one-sided final ended 4-1 with Senegal clinching their sixth record trophy of the tournament. Senegal won gold and a championship trophy, Mozambique settled for silver while Morocco went with bronze. 

Senegal and Mozambique match on as Africa’s representatives in the Beach Soccer World Cup 2021 in Moscow, Russia in from August 19th to 29th 2021. 

The Ugandan team will touch down on home soil tomorrow Monday 31, 2021 aboard Ethiopia Airlines. 

They will be awarded a cash prize of UGX 185.9M to share between the 24 man delegation. The money is as per the FUFA allowance and bonus system for their exceptional performance at the 2021 AFCON BEACH Soccer tournament in Senegal, West Africa.
