The Uganda Premier League Secretariat on Monday released the names of coaches and players that will contend for May’s awards. As the Uganda Premier League season 2020/21 draws near to the end, coaches and players are vying for individual accolades. These awards play a vital role in individual players’ performances with regards to motivation and building a good CV. For May, the star performing players and outstanding coaches have been nominated and voting is ongoing for these awards.

In the player of the month category, the UPL secretariat has shortlisted three players and one prominent name on the shortlist is Express FC star striker Eric ‘Kenzo’ Kambale, alongside the likes of Steven Mukwala of URA FC and Viane Ssekajugo who has made Wakiso Giants a force to reckon with lately.

Looking at the three players individually, Eric Kambale was very instrumental in springing the Red Eagles to the top of the UPL table. The star striker now has 15 league goals to his name this season, and only one behind leading top scorer Yunus Ssentamu for this season. Kambale scored in the five matches played and Kyetume FC fans remember him for his hat trick against them in the league.

Another candidate is Viane Sekajugo, who also made the shortlist owing to his form for Wakiso Giants recently. Viane for the month of May had a return of five goals in as many games, except for the game against Busoga United where he failed to put one past. His brace against Kitara FC, and others coming against others UPL teams put him among the candidates for the player of the month award for May.

And lastly, Steven Mukwala also made the cut thanks to his impressive run last month, scoring four goals and assisting in others for URA FC. The technically gifted forward bagged a brace against UPDF FC and netted one apiece against Onduparaka FC and Police FC.

In the coach of the month category, there is Express FC of Wasswa Bbosa, Douglas Bamweyana of Wakiso Giants, and Sam Ssimbwa of URA FC. The three managers outdid themselves last month as they guided their teams to great heights in the UPL. Bbosa won all the 5 league games in May for Express FC and eventually helped displace URA and Vipers from the top of the table.

Whilst Bamweyana on the other hand dragged Wakiso Giants to seventh in the league by registering four wins and drawing against  Busoga United FC in the month of May. Sam Ssimbwa for URA also made the list despite his disappointing loss to Kyetume FC. He managed to pick up three wins and a very crucial draw against Vipers SC. The winners for all these two categories will be named in a function that will be held at a date yet to be confirmed later and each will be given an additional cash prize.
