Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei late last night took to the track in Stadio Luigi Ridolfion for the third meeting of the 2021 Wanda Diamond League in Italy. Cheptegei competed against the likes of INGEBRIGTSEN, Jakob from Norway, GEBRHIWET, Hagos of Ethiopia, AHMED, Mohammed, KATIR, Mohamed, and KOECH, Robert Kiprop of Kenya.

But despite his tremendous body fitness to which he admitted earlier on in a press conference before the race, he wasn’t able to claim the first spot as he had anticipated with even better timing of 12:40.

Cheptegei was defeated by a young Norwegian Ingebrigtsen Jacob who finished in the first position with the timing of 12: 48.45, followed by Ethiopian GEBRHIWET, Hagos in 12:49.02, during that night in Florence.

The 5000m world record holder needs greater effort if he is to stand a chance of being a gold medalist for team Uganda during the Tokyo Olympics in Japan. But competitions like the one of yesterday are a good opportunity for an athlete to test their level of fitness against other opponents, and his record of 12:54.69 was only 00: 14.69 shy of his target and this could help him push himself to better timing when he returns to Uganda for training.

We look forward to winning great things with him during the Tokyo Olympics in Japan and even yesterday’s performance from the East Africa Community perspectives, Cheptegei was able to finish ahead of his Kenyan opponents and hence lifting our flag high among the east African ranking.
