Uganda Sports Press Association announced its monthly sports personalities for the months of January, February and March where the winners will be presented at the awards ceremony next week.
Top of the agenda was a discussion on the way forward to the ongoing denial for journalists to access sports venues mainly the coverage of rugby matches. The association head Mr. Patrick Kanyomozi notified the journalists that the on-going pandemic had come with challenges to which the journalists are not exempt.
In his address, Kanyomozi took time to present the new staff who were elceted into office. Among the presented was the new treasurer Mr. Laurian Lubulwa
Sports personality of the month of January went to the pool’s Lukiya Nayiga. The 21-year-old beat off stiff competition from Joshua Cheptegei for the accolade after winning the Esther Lungu pool Championship in Zambia
Badminton’s Husina Kobugabe went away with the February month honors after winning gold in both the mixed and women’s doubles at the first badminton tournament following the coronavirus pandemic. She partnered with Mable Namakoye to win the women’s double and with Brian Kasirye to win the mixed doubles, all in straight sets. The 19-year-old Ndejje Student was also voted the Real Stars Sports Personality for the month of February.
AFCON U-20 top goal scorer Derrick Kakooza scooped the March award after leading the Hippos to the AFCON U-20 finals in Mauritania. He scored 5 goals in 6 matches enroute to the finals where the Hippos lost 2-0 to Ghana. He beat Paralympian Ocira Richard to the accolade.
