At the end of May 2021, Fred Kajoba who had been with the Venom for the most part of the 2020/2021 season resigned from the position of head coach citing a disagreement with Charles Masembe, the technical director of Vipers Football Club. Fred Kajoba was quoted saying “When I returned from the Uganda Cranes training on Monday (31st May 2021) morning, Charles Masembe (Vipers’ Technical Director) asked me to choose between Vipers FC and the national team and I made the decision to stay with Uganda Cranes,” he said.

After only managing 40 games, winning 23, drawing 10, and losing 7 this season, he left Vipers third on the table with 56 points and only 2 points off the league leaders

Express FC. Could he have won it all? Well, we would never know but finishing 2 points off the league leaders suggests the league tightness this season given the small margins between the top 3 teams. But the tactician was surely a force to reckon with having lost only 7 games when he was still in charge of things at Vipers Football Club.

What next? The streets are not quiet. Mike Mutebi is still without a coaching role after parting ways with KCCA, a club where he won 3 league titles, 2 Uganda cups, 4 super cups, and 1 CECAFA Clubs cup, making him one of the most decorated managers in the league. Mutebi with a win rate of more than 60% at KCCA FC, it’s very plausible that the most successful manager in the KCCA FC’s history could become the next tactician at Vipers FC.

Again, we cannot distance ourselves from the possibility that Charles Livingstone Mbabazi could be the next tactician whom vipers could consider. Far-fetched? I believe not. The former Uganda Cranes international is the second assistant coach of the National team and since falling out with Wakiso Giants FC, he seems committed to his role on the national team.

However, owing to his coaching expeditions over the past years at Onduparaka, Wakiso Giants FC, Kyetume FC, and his instrumental role for the “Ankole Lions”, Mbarara City FC this season, he probably could be another tactician take up the vacant managerial role at Vipers. Also with Edward Golola open to a return to Kitende with the Vipers, he could also be another potential candidate to take the job, given his history with the club but one thing remains clear though, Vipers have a vast range of options to choose from should they decided to hire a full-time manager to take care of things at Kitende.

But as it stands, the caretaker coach, Paul Kiwanuka, and his assistant Francis Mugerwa has so far managed to secure the venom a semifinal berth in the Uganda Cup, when his side knockout SC villa, and given his performances in the remaining four matches for the venom, he could also challenge for the position permanently come the end of the season. After more than three weeks without league football, Paul Kiwanuka and his side will this Saturday 19th June 2021, play host to another club without a manager in Onduparaka at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende and many will be looking to see how the man will fair in his first match as the manager of the venom.
