Absa Bank Uganda has announced a sh 152 million sponsorship package for the 2024 edition of the Captain’s Bell Tournament that is scheduled for 18 May 2024 at the Uganda Golf Club, Kitante.
This is the annual tournament where the new Captain hosts the club members and introduces the new management team. The 2024/25 Committee is led by Captain Paul Charles Rukundo and his Vice Captain Jerry Owachi, who have been elected to lead the team.
Absa Bank Thrilled
While announcing the sponsorship, Absa Uganda’s Managing Director Mumba Kalifungwa said, “We are thrilled to continue to support this tournament whose contribution to nurturing and growing the sport cannot be understated. This sponsorship underscores our profound reverence for the game of golf in Uganda, epitomized by the time-honored tradition embodied in the ringing of the Captain’s Bell.”
Absa Bank Uganda was the official sponsor of the 2023 Captain’s Bell Tournament that saw the former Uganda Ladies Golf Union President Anne Abeja and Vincent Katusi emerge overall winners in the amateur category. In the professional category, Marvin Kibirige emerged as the winner after he posted a net score of 6 under par 138 to win the biggest share of the UGX 10M.
Tee Off Date
The 2024 edition of the Captain’s Bell Tournament will take place on Saturday 18 May 2024 at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, located on John Babiiha Road in Kololo. The professionals will play for a kitty of UGX 20,000,000.
Speaking about the tournament, Paul Charles Rukundo the current Captain of Uganda Golf Club, enthusiastically shared, “For over 70 years, the Captain’s Bell tournament has united exceptional players, colleagues, and friends.
Throughout this incredible journey, our community has flourished, thanks to the unwavering support of partners like Absa Bank Uganda. We deeply value their dedication to enhancing the sport of golf in Uganda.”
Absa has been a long-term sponsor of the tournament and with this sixth edition of sponsorship looks to continue boosting the game of golf in Uganda with this sixth sponsorship edition. In addition, the bank has over the last three years supported several Ugandan golfers to participate in the prestigious Magical Kenya Open, which is part of the European Golf Tour.

Last Year’s Captain’s Bell Tournament
Last year, Marvin Kibirige equalled the Kitante course record when he carded 9 under par 63 on day one of the pro category of the Absa Captain’s Bell tournament.
He took a 7 stroke lead over Adolf Muhumuza, who shot a round of 2 under par 70 at the par 72 UGC course at Kitante.
The Absa Captain’s Bell last year attracted 31 UPGA members for a prize kitty of sh10 million.
Last year’s overall winners were Dickson Agaba and Bernadette Musanabera.
