The CECAFA Kagame Cup 2024 is set to kick off in Tanzania, marking the return of the regional football tournament after a two-year hiatus. Organized by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), the tournament is scheduled to take place from July 20th to August 4th, 2024.

Tournament Details
John Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director, confirmed the tournament’s revival and outlined its significance. The event will serve as a crucial preseason platform for participating teams to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League, CAF Confederations Cup, and domestic league campaigns.

Participation and Format
The tournament will feature 16 teams, with 12 teams representing member associations, including Zanzibar, and an additional four invited teams. Gecheo highlighted that alongside the Premier League champions from the 12 member associations, CECAFA will extend invitations to enhance the competition’s diversity and excitement.

Previous Editions and Records
The CECAFA Kagame Cup, historically significant in East and Central African football, has witnessed memorable moments and notable champions. Tanzania’s Simba SC boasts a record six titles, followed closely by Young Africans SC (Tanzania) and Tusker FC (Kenya) with five titles each. Teams such as APR FC (Rwanda), Al Merriekh (Sudan), SC Villa (Uganda), and Gor Mahia FC (Kenya) have also left their mark, clinching the title three times each.

Return After Hiatus
Following the pandemic-induced break, the CECAFA Kagame Cup’s return is eagerly anticipated by football enthusiasts across the region.
