The excitement in the air is palpable as the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has released critical details of the highly-anticipated 2024/2025 Interclub season. With the calendar set and the number of berths allocated to each Member Association confirmed, football fans across the continent are gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling competition.

The road to glory kicks off with the Preliminary Round scheduled to take place on August 16-18, 2024. This initial stage will see clubs from various Member Associations vying for a chance to make their mark on the continental stage. Following the Preliminary Round, the Group Stages are locked in for October to December 2024, offering fans a feast of football action as clubs battle it out for a spot in the knockout phase.

The knockout phase, a pivotal moment in the Interclub season, will set the stage for the final showdown between the best of the best. March to May 2025 will witness pulsating matches as clubs compete for ultimate glory and the chance to etch their names in African football history.

Top 12 African Leagues allocated 2 slots

A major development in this season’s format is the allocation of berths to Member Associations, with the top 12 national associations securing the opportunity to enter two clubs each in both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. The 12 highest-ranked Member Associations in the CAF rankings include Algeria, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, and Tanzania. This move aims to ensure a high level of competition and representation from across the continent.

In a bid to streamline the registration process, CAF has opened the registration period for Member Associations to enlist their eligible clubs on the CAF Competitions Management System (CMS). This step underscores CAF’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient organization of the Interclub season while providing clubs with a platform to showcase their talent and compete at the highest level.

Four registration window periods have been confirmed to all Participating Member Associations as follows:

01 July – 20 July:

Players participating in the Preliminary Round

21 July – 31 August:

Players participating in the Second Preliminary Round

01 – 30 September:

Players participating in the Group Stages

01 – 31 January 2025:

Maximum of seven (7) additional players, including four (4) replacements.

Competition Format:

The addition of the second preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup remains cancelled.

Consequently, teams eliminated in the second round of the CAF Champions League will no longer transition into the CAF Confederation Cup.

Clubs that advance from the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup will proceed directly to the group stage of the competition.
