– AIU provisionally suspends Reuben Kipyego for whereabouts failure.

– Notice of allegation issued, response required.

– Whereabouts non-compliance: missed anti-doping test.

– Provisional suspension mandatory for adverse analytical findings.

– Presumption of innocence maintained; precautionary suspension.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has taken provisional action against Reuben Kiprop Kipyego from Kenya due to a failure in whereabouts compliance.

According to a released statement, the AIU has issued a notice of allegation to the 2021 Milan Marathon champion, requiring him to provide a response before further steps are taken.

Whats “Whereabouts non-compliance?”

Whereabouts non-compliance arises when an athlete does not make themselves available for an unannounced anti-doping test at their specified location within the designated 60-minute time frame, commonly referred to as a missed test.

The AIU further noted that a provisional suspension is mandatory under the World Anti-Doping Rules in Athletics following an adverse analytical finding relating to any unlisted substance on the Prohibited List.

A provisional suspension may be imposed in other doping cases, depending on the nature and circumstances of the case. This ruling in the doping case does not in any way abrogate the principle of the presumption of innocence and does not constitute a premature determination of guilt. Rather, it is an order issued on a precautionary basis to protect the interests of the sport.

It also refers to an athlete filing inaccurate or incomplete details to enable doping officers locate them for testing as well as failure to submit this information within the designated deadline.

Three consecutive filing failure or missed test results in a whereabout failure for which an athlete is liable for a two-year suspension from competitions.

Kipyego Profile

Kipyego’s last race was the NN Rotterdam Marathon in 2022, where he finished an impressive third place. He also competed in three races in 2021, where he won the Milan Marathon, then finished eighth in the Chicago Marathon, and then finished second in the Abu Dhabi Marathon.

He competed sparingly and began his career in the marathon, hence there are no records of his performances on the track. He began his career with a full marathon at the Maratón de Buenos Aires Ñandú in 2019, where he finished second.

How Reuben Kiprop Kipyego faired at 2022 Rotterdam Marathon

Reuben Kiprop Kipyego was beaten in a close finish, settling for third at the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands on Sunday 10 April 2022.

A large lead pack formed early on in the men’s race as they passed through 10km in 29:29 and half way in 1:02:16. The pack started to whittle itself down in the second half though, and by 30km – reached in 1:28:31 – just seven men remained in the group: Nageeye, Olympic bronze medallist Bashir Abdi, Ethiopia’s Leul Gebreselassie, Kenya’s Dominic Kiptarus, Reuben Kiprop Kipyego, Kenneth Kipkemoi and Philemon Kacheran.

Kipyego and Gebreselassie continued to push the pace in the closing stages and it was enough to drop most of the athletes left in the lead pack. Abdi, who set a European record of 2:03:36 when winning on a previous year’s rescheduled Rotterdam Marathon in October, started to drift behind just before 40km, leaving Nageeye, Kipyego and Gebreselassie to battle it out for the podium places.

Kipyego couldn’t quite match the finishing pace of Gebreselassie and Nageeye as the duo sprinted for the line.

In the end Nageeye just edged ahead to cross the line in 2:04:56, taking more than a minute off the Dutch record he set in this same city in 2019. Gebreselassie was given the same time in second place, the fifth sub-2:05 clocking of his career, while Kipyego took third in 2:05:12, 11 seconds ahead of Abdi.
