Rwanda’s football governing body, FERWAFA, has found itself at a crossroads as the future of Amavubi head coach Torsten Frank Spittler hangs in the balance. Alphonse Munyantwali, the president of Ferwafa, has acknowledged that discussions regarding Spittler’s tenure will take place at the appropriate time. With only five months remaining on his contract, the German tactician’s fate leading the national team remains uncertain, despite the team’s stellar performances under his guidance.

Spittler assumed the reins of the Rwandan national team in November 2023, and since then, he has overseen a remarkable transformation in the team’s fortunes. The Amavubi have shown immense progress under his stewardship, achieving impressive results that have propelled them to the summit of Group C in the 2026 World Cup Africa qualifiers. In a group that includes football powerhouses like Nigeria and South Africa, Rwanda’s rise to the top spot is a testament to the impact Spittler has had on the team.

Munyantwali admitted Spittler has done an extraordinary job so far before saying that it is “too early” to determine his future. “The coach is doing great but it’s too soon to discuss his future at the moment,” Munyantwali told the press on Wednesday, June 12 as quoted by Times Sports.

“I don’t think it is time to discuss it. But when time comes, we shall evaluate his performance and hold talks with him and you will know the outcomes,” he added.

Rwanda had gone over two years without a win in competitive games until Spittler took over. In his last six games, he has won three, drawn two and lost one.

He has easily dispatched fierce opponents such as South Africa and Lesotho in the World Cup qualifiers.

Despite the team’s success on the pitch and their promising position in the qualifying campaign, Spittler has indicated that there has been no formal approach from the authorities to discuss extending his contract. This lack of communication regarding his future has left many wondering about the continuity of his tenure with the national team.

Spittler’s coaching tenure has been marked by a commitment to developing a cohesive and competitive squad that has defied expectations on the international stage. His tactical acumen and ability to instill a winning mentality in the players have been evident in Rwanda’s performances, as they have emerged as a serious contender in the competitive African football landscape.

As the clock ticks down on Spittler’s contract, the uncertainty surrounding his future raises questions about the direction Ferwafa intends to take with the national team. Will the impressive results achieved under his leadership be enough to secure his continued presence at the helm of the Amavubi, or will the governing body opt for a new direction?

The coming months will prove crucial in determining the next chapter in Rwanda’s football journey, as discussions regarding Spittler’s future and the direction of the national team unfold. For now, Rwandan football enthusiasts will eagerly await the decision that Ferwafa makes regarding the fate of their successful coach, Torsten Frank Spittler.
