Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have experienced a recent setback in their FIFA rankings, dropping eight places to 38th overall. This decline comes on the heels of a disappointing performance in the race for the 2026 World Cup. In FIFA’s most recent rankings, Nigeria now sits at fifth in Africa, having slipped two spots in the continental hierarchy. The top-ranked African team is now Morocco, which climbed one place to 12th overall. Senegal, Egypt, and Cote d’Ivoire follow closely behind in second, third, and fourth place on the continent, respectively. Meanwhile, traditional football powerhouses like Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England continue to dominate the global rankings.

The Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying campaign has been lackluster, with only three points secured from four matches. This places them four points behind leaders Rwanda in Group C.
