Rivers United, a prominent club in the Nigeria Premier Football League, has made a significant coaching appointment ahead of the 2024/2025 season. The club has named former Nigerian international and accomplished coach Finidi George as their new head coach.
No one influenced Finidi appointment
The decision to hire George came following the departure of Stanley Eguma as the team’s technical adviser last season. Evans Ogenyi then took over as the interim coach before the club opted to bring in a more permanent solution in the form of Finidi George.

Previous clubs coached by George Finidi
George, who previously managed Enyimba International, had a brief stint managing the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles. However, he chose to retire from coaching after just two games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
In September 2021, Enyimba F.C. named Finidi as their new head coach. He won his first title as a coach on the 11th of June 2023, winning the Nigeria Premier League at Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
In April 2024, he was appointed coach of the Nigerian national football team.
Before this appointment, He was the assistant coach to Jose Peseiro and was the Interim coach who led the Super Eagles to beat Ghana 2-1 ending 18 years of unsuccessful attempts to defeat the Black Stars.[

Finidi penned down a two years working contract at Q FM
Upon signing a two-year contract with Rivers United, George expressed his enthusiasm to lead the team and outlined his primary goal for the upcoming season: to restore the club to its former glory and secure a spot in continental competitions.
With a distinguished playing career that spanned over fifteen years, George brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team. His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League title with Enyimba International FC in 2023.
