In a significant advancement for Tanzanian football, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has officially received Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment, set to be installed at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The introduction of VAR is aimed at improving the accuracy of refereeing decisions, which has been a contentious issue in football globally. TFF Media and Information Officer, Clifford Ndimbo, has confirmed that local technicians are currently undergoing comprehensive training on how to install and manage the VAR system.
“Following the training for technicians, the next step will involve training of referees to effectively utilize the technology,” Ndimbo stated. This dual approach ensures that both the technical and practical aspects of the system are covered, providing a holistic upgrade to the officiating framework.

During the TFF’s 18th Annual General Meeting in Iringa last year, TFF President Wallace Karia announced the provision of VAR equipment by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He emphasized the importance of adhering to FIFA and CAF standards for installation. The next step involves potentially extending VAR to other key venues like the Amaan Sports Complex in Zanzibar.
Stakeholder Support and Future Prospects
The move to introduce VAR has been met with widespread approval from various stakeholders in the Tanzanian football community. Almasi Kasongo, CEO of the Tanzania Premier League Board, highlighted the critical role of VAR in providing referees with an opportunity to review and rectify controversial decisions. This, he argued, would lead to a fairer and more transparent game.
“The presence of VAR will not only reduce errors but also increase the confidence of both players and fans in the fairness of the game,” Kasongo noted.

The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, with a seating capacity of 60,000, is not only the largest stadium in Tanzania but also a crucial venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Tanzania, in collaboration with Kenya and Uganda, will be hosting this prestigious event.
