According to an official statement released by FECAFOOT, the decision to remove Brys and appoint Ndtoungou was made following a heated confrontation between Brys and federation president Samuel Eto’o.

The conflict between Brys and Eto’o reportedly escalated during a working session held in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon. The tension had been brewing since Brys was initially hired by the country’s sports ministry in April, a move that apparently went against Eto’o’s preferences for the coaching position. The situation reached a boiling point when some of Brys’ support staff, who had also been appointed by the sports ministry, were denied access to the meeting on Tuesday.

The sudden change in coaching leadership has raised questions about the internal dynamics and decision-making processes within FECAFOOT. The federation’s ability to manage disputes and conflicts within its ranks will be closely scrutinized in the coming days as the national team gears up for the World Cup qualifiers.

Martin Ndtoungou

Martin Ndtoungou, who has been appointed as the interim coach, will face the challenging task of stepping into a potentially volatile situation and steadying the ship as the team prepares for its upcoming matches. With limited time to adjust to his new role and understand the team dynamics, Ndtoungou will need to demonstrate strong leadership and tactical acumen to guide the team through this period of transition.

FECAFOOT held a meeting of its Emergency Committee, which voted to implement the adjustment.

The decision might put Eto’o at odds with the sports ministry, which has previously stayed firm on Brys’ appointment despite resistance from the federation.

Football federations typically hire and pay their coaches, however in some African countries, the government does so, particularly when federations are underfunded.Cameroon has four points from its first two qualifiers and will host Cape Verde on June 8 before travelling to Angola three days later.

Only the winners of the nine six-team groups are automatically qualified for the finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
